Fellow Animator, Nik Ranieri, shared a wonderful photo of how live action reference was used during the making of Disney’s beloved film “The Little Mermaid” with the help of a very familiar face!

Take a look!
One of the things they used to do on these films was to shoot live action reference for the animators to study. This video was not rotoscoped. It was merely used to help with certain movement and drawing problems. Because it wasn’t meant to be traced, some of the crew were used as stand-ins for characters not deemed necessary for live action reference. Here’s Sherri Stoner as Ariel with Glen Keane helping out.
